Judge-turned-professor Jung Young-hwan of Korea University appointed as People Power Party's Public Official Candidate Committee Chairperson
Han Dong-hoon, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, appointed Professor Jeong Young-hwan, a former judge and professor at Korea University Law School, as the chairman of the nomination management committee for this year’s general election on the 5th.
After concluding the New Year greeting event at the Gyeonggi Provincial Party Office, Chairman Han told reporters, "The People Power Party has appointed Professor Jeong Young-hwan of Korea University Law School as the chairman of the nomination management committee in preparation for the general election." He explained the reason for the appointment, saying, "Professor Jeong is well-known for his fair legal research and is considered the right person to handle the party’s persuasive and fair nominations with objective judgment that is not biased to the left or right."
Professor Jeong is a legal expert and former judge who graduated from Gangneung High School and Korea University Law School, passed the bar exam, and served as a judge at the Seoul High Court and as a judicial research officer at the Supreme Court. He has also served as president of the Korean Civil Execution Law Association and the Korean Law Professors Association.
Chairman Han said, "There will be a schedule to appoint the nomination committee members later," adding, "Rather than appointing the members all at once without consulting the chairman, we plan to appoint the nomination committee chairman first and then consult with him."
Regarding President Yoon Suk-yeol’s exercise of the re-request right (veto power) on the so-called dual special prosecutor law concerning the Daejang-dong 5 billion club allegations and the stock manipulation allegations involving First Lady Kim Keon-hee and Deutsche Motors, Chairman Han said, "It is only natural."
He stated, "The Daejang-dong 5 billion club special prosecutor, which has a protective nature, seems too transparent in its intention to halt all ongoing trials (including those related to Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party)." About the special prosecutor for First Lady Kim, he said, "The Deutsche Motors special prosecutor is nothing new." When asked by reporters whether a special prosecutor would be possible after the general election, he replied, "The first question is whether it is appropriate to have a special prosecutor at all, and in that regard, I think it is not greatly necessary."
However, he expressed a progressive stance on the introduction of a special inspector and a second secretariat. Chairman Han said he "agreed" with the possibility of establishing a second secretariat, which was hinted at by the presidential office during their response to reporters. He added, "The special inspector and the second secretariat are different areas from the dual special prosecutor implementation. I see this as a progressive explanation from the presidential office, and if the party can assist in the process, we will prepare diligently."
