Seongnam Wiryesamdong Line Metropolitan Railroad Selected as 'Preliminary Feasibility Study Project'

The metropolitan railway project extending 10.6km from the original downtown area of Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, through Seongnam High-Tech Valley to Samdong Station in Gwangju-si has been finally confirmed as a target project for the government's preliminary feasibility study.

Seongnam City announced on the 5th that the Wirye-Samdong Line metropolitan railway project was finally selected as a target project for the preliminary feasibility study by the Financial Project Evaluation Committee conducted under the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The preliminary feasibility study will officially begin after selecting the investigation agency and other procedures.

Since the direction of the project will be determined based on the results of the preliminary feasibility study, Seongnam City plans to actively respond to the verification and evaluation of the project's feasibility and devote all efforts to passing the second gate, the preliminary feasibility study.

This project was reflected as a new project in the 4th National Railway Network Construction Plan by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2021, and after a prior feasibility study, it was selected as a target project for this preliminary feasibility study.

As part of the Wirye Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Project, if the Wirye-Sinsa Line, currently promoted by Seoul City, is extended from Seongnam to Gwangju, it is expected to greatly improve the transportation environment of Seongnam City, as well as balanced development of the original downtown area and convenience of movement for Seongnam citizens.

Seongnam City has been steadily conducting a prior feasibility study since April 2022 to be selected as a target project for the preliminary feasibility study of the Wirye-Samdong Line metropolitan railway project.

A Seongnam City official said, "We will actively explain the necessity of the Wirye-Samdong Line railway project to related organizations such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance and continue to cooperate with Gwangju City to realize the Wirye-Samdong Line metropolitan railway project, which is a long-cherished project of Seongnam citizens, and do our best."
