Core of the Local Era: Focused Administrative Efforts on Establishing POSTECH Medical School

Pohang City is accelerating efforts to create a dignified city where everyone wants to live, in order to open a true local era led by the region.

The city views the creation of an ecosystem led by local governments as a priority to realize the government's national goal of a "local era where it is good to live anywhere," and is making every effort to create a livable environment for citizens by improving residential conditions.

To this end, the city is promoting the establishment of the ‘POSTECH Medical School’ and a smart hospital as key projects to resolve the regional medical imbalance concentrated in the metropolitan area.

With no advanced general hospitals in the Gyeongbuk region, Pohang City is focusing administrative power on establishing a medical school at POSTECH to prevent local medical gaps and address the shortage of severe emergency medical care. In addition, the city plans to establish a smart hospital to prevent the outflow of medical personnel and build a rapid infectious disease response system.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “The core of the local era is to increase urban population, and the most prioritized areas for this are medical care and education,” adding, “The establishment of POSTECH Medical School, which can prevent the concentration in the metropolitan area south of Gyeonggi, will be the key to creating a medical and educational innovation city that leads the local era.”

Along with this, the city is steadily expanding green spaces in residential areas to ensure that citizens can encounter green forest paths anywhere through various projects.

Centered around Posco-daero, the city continues to expand the Sangsaeng Forest Trail and urban forests, creating green rest areas and various convenience facilities such as clay paths in the Songdo Pine Forest Urban Forest and Haedo Urban Forest. The restoration of Haksancheon ecological stream will be completed this year, and urban stream restoration will be carried out sequentially to create an eco-friendly urban area where people gather along the waterways.

Following the opening of the SRT bound for Suseo last year, which secured transportation options for citizens, the city plans to continuously expand the number of operations to make it more convenient to use.

The Yeongilman Bridge, with a government budget of 135 billion KRW reflected this year, will be expedited for ordering through consultations with the government, and the Dongbin Bridge connecting Yeongildae and Songdo will be completed as planned to complete the economic and tourism bridge. In preparation for the opening of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport, the city is thoroughly preparing in advance for the construction of high-speed rail and road networks connecting Pohang, enhancing urban competitiveness through the establishment of a metropolitan transportation network.

To strengthen and widely promote the capabilities of cultural city Pohang, the city is prioritizing the construction of a municipal museum, a second art museum, and a national science museum.

Additionally, the city generously supports cultural projects that citizens can experience and enjoy by hosting the Korea Reading Festival and the Gyeongbuk Lifelong Learning Expo, and strives to create a sports culture city where all generations can freely enjoy sports by continuously expanding the National Sports Center, exclusive sports parks for community athletes, and gateball and park golf courses to normalize daily sports activities.
