Passing through Jeokbyeok Trail, a scenic spot of Imjingang River
Enjoy watching leisurely floating Hwangpo sailboats
The Gyeonggi Dullegil ‘Paju Course 8’ is an 18.3 km trail that takes about 6 hours and 5 minutes to walk from Yulgok Wetland Park to Jangnamgyo (Wondang-ri). The difficulty level is classified as ‘medium’.
If using public transportation, take a bus from Munsan Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line and get off at the Yulgok 2-ri stop.
The starting stamp features Yulgok Yi I, a prominent scholar of the mid-Joseon Dynasty, and the 5,000 won bill. Paju is the region where Yulgok Yi I’s ancestral home is located and where he ended his official career and life. At the foot of Jaun Mountain, there are Yi I’s tomb and Shin Saimdang’s tomb.
Starting from Yulgok Wetland Park, walking along the ridges of rice paddies and mountain paths reclaimed from leftover land by the Imjin River, you will reach the Papyong-myeon Administrative Welfare Center. Restrooms are available here. Near the center, there are restaurants and convenience stores.
One of the features of Paju Course 8 is that you can walk along the Imjin River. After passing the Papyong-myeon Administrative Welfare Center and walking through Nulno Stream, you will pass the scenic Jeokbyeok (Red Cliff) walking trail along the Imjin River. The columnar joints of Jeokbyeok on the Imjin River are known to have been formed by volcanic activity during the Cenozoic era. It is said that ancestors named it ‘Jeokbyeok’ because the columnar joints along the Imjin River appeared red or purple. In autumn, the area is dyed with ivy and stonecrop. It sometimes looks even redder in the sunset light.
Passing Jangpa Intersection and Jajang-ri Village Hall, you will come to the Hwangpo Sailboat Ferry Terminal. You can also watch the Hwangpo sailboats drifting leisurely on the Imjin River. The Hwangpo sailboats, which used to carry ginseng, soybeans, and agricultural products from Paju to Mapo Ferry, have been reborn as a tourist attraction.
Passing Dujinaru, where you can ride the Hwangpo sailboat, and climbing up the riverbank, you will arrive near Jangnamgyo. Crossing Jangnamgyo leads you to Yeoncheon County in Gyeonggi Province.
