Ryu Sam-yeong "Fortunately avoided carotid artery... felt it was divine luck"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was attacked during his visit to Busan, and it is reported that former Senior Superintendent Ryu Sam-young, who accompanied him, managed the chaotic scene caused by the sudden knife attack. Former Senior Superintendent Ryu is a veteran police officer known as a leading 'investigation expert.' He gained recognition last year for leading opposition to the establishment of the Police Bureau under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. Recently, ahead of next year's general election, he was selected as the Democratic Party's third recruited talent.
On the 3rd, former Senior Superintendent Ryu said on the YouTube channel 'Kim Eo-jun's Humility is Difficult News Factory,' "I did not see the moment of the attack. I was about 5 meters away from the leader," adding, "The leader was walking with the crowd, but when I looked back, the crowd split into two groups and the leader's head suddenly appeared."
Recognizing the attack on the leader, former Senior Superintendent Ryu immediately headed toward him and quickly began managing the scene. He said, "The party staff were just holding down the perpetrator and didn’t know what to do," adding, "I told the detectives to handcuff him and to go look for the weapon." He continued, "Subduing the person first is the priority, and evidence comes next," and "(Afterwards) I sent a detective to find the weapon, and one of the people in front pulled out the weapon. I told them not to touch it and to quickly escort this person to the police station."
Former Senior Superintendent Ryu explained the situation at the time, saying, "After the perpetrator was subdued and the weapon secured, I ordered to escort him to the police station. When I came back to the leader’s side, people were gathered around his head, and his feet were being stepped on by the crowd," adding, "There were party staff and detectives, so I told them to form a scrum to secure space for the leader and shielded him with an umbrella."
Due to the attack, the leader sustained a laceration on the left side of his neck and was treated while conscious. Regarding the weapon used, former Senior Superintendent Ryu said, "It was a knife decorated like a Bronze Dagger of Gojoseon," adding, "Because the knife was used to stab vital points, the leader must have suffered significant damage."
Regarding the emergency treatment for the leader, he said, "Chief Secretary Chun Jun-ho and supporter Mr. Oh were pressing the wound with a handkerchief," adding, "I told the leader that the pressure wasn’t enough and that it needed to be pressed harder, but the leader said he was okay, so I continued to apply pressure." He further added, "Normally, if the carotid artery is severed, there is massive bleeding," and "(The leader) was not in that situation, so we were fortunate and considered it a stroke of luck while pressing the wound."
Meanwhile, on the 2nd, the leader was attacked with a knife near the site of the new airport on Gadeokdo Island in Busan by Kim, born in 1957. Kim is known to be a self-employed real estate agent living in Asan, Chungnam Province. The police are investigating Kim’s motive and whether the crime was premeditated.
