Minju: "Lee's Attack is Political Terror... Strong Measures Against Fake News as Secondary Crime"

Suspect, a Democratic Party Member, Says... "Cooperating with Police to Confirm Party Affiliation"
Strict Measures on 'Murder Threats and Fake News' Related to Lee Jae-myung

The Democratic Party of Korea has classified the stabbing attack on Representative Lee Jae-myung as a "political terror" and condemned it as a "serious threat to democracy." They have announced plans to take strict legal action against the 'murder threats' and 'fake news' targeting Representative Lee.

Park Seong-jun, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, told reporters after the Supreme Council meeting on the 3rd, "This is a clear act of political terror and a serious crime," adding, "It is a serious threat to democracy." He continued, "In a closed Supreme Council meeting, it was mentioned that the party is in an emergency situation regarding the attack on the party leader, and that members should maintain cautious and restrained behavior and a sense of tension," and "There was also a request to refrain from premature predictions or political interpretations."

He said, "There have been inquiries about the suspect's party affiliation, whether they were a member of the People Power Party before joining the Democratic Party," and added, "We will actively cooperate when there is an official request from the police regarding party affiliation." He emphasized, "All details of the crime, including the motive for the terror, must be thoroughly revealed through the police investigation."

He also stated, "Some media outlets have described Representative Lee Jae-myung's wound as a laceration, but since it was a deep stab wound from a sharp weapon, he underwent surgery to suture the jugular vein," and requested, "Please use the term 'stab wound' instead of 'laceration'." He added, "Only the representative and his family are allowed in the intensive care unit, so the party leadership has not been able to visit."

The Democratic Party plans to respond strongly to the 'murder threats' and 'fake news' targeting Representative Lee Jae-myung. Spokesperson Park warned, "There have been continuous murder threat posts against the representative on far-right YouTube channels and internet communities," and said, "We will track them down and take strict action." He also announced plans for legal action against fake news related to the attack on Representative Lee, stating, "Far-right YouTubers continue to spread fake news."

Senior Supreme Council member Jeong Cheong-rae condemned "secondary harm and secondary terror caused by the spread of fake news" during the Supreme Council meeting held earlier that morning. Jeong said, "Reading articles about YouTubers who raised conspiracy theories claiming that fake blood was used with a fake knife makes one think about how cruel and depraved people can be," and reiterated, "Those who commit secondary terror through fake news must be rooted out just as severely as violent criminals."
