2023 Singapore 'Car of the Year' is Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 5 has been selected as the 'Car of the Year' by a local media outlet in Singapore. This is the first time Hyundai has received this award in Singapore.

On the 1st, Hyundai Motor announced that the Ioniq 5 was chosen as such in Singapore.

The 'Car of the Year' award in Singapore, conducted by Singapore's largest daily newspaper, The Straits Times, since 2003, is selected annually by a panel of 12 judges who evaluate newly released vehicles. Only one model is chosen from all vehicle categories.

For this award, 40 new cars released in Singapore from mid-November 2022 to mid-November 2023 were nominated. The Ioniq 5 advanced to the finals along with nine other vehicles including the BMW i7 and Toyota Vellfire, and ultimately won the award.

In the finals, nine categories were evaluated: ▲practicality ▲economy ▲performance ▲handling ▲efficiency ▲design ▲ride comfort ▲assembly quality ▲intangible quality (X-factor).

The Ioniq 5 received excellent evaluations in most categories including practicality, economy, and design, scoring a total of 399 points, surpassing the second-place Toyota Vellfire by 40.5 points. Other vehicles scored in order were BYD Seal, Lotus Electra, MG MG4, BMW i7, Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 408, and Citro?n e-C4.

Lin Tan, a judge from The Straits Times, commented, "The Ioniq 5 is a versatile car," adding, "Its retro appeal combined with futuristic design and surprisingly practical space is impressive."

This is the first time Hyundai has received this award. With this win, Hyundai plans to strengthen its image as a leading electric vehicle brand locally, alongside the recently completed 'Hyundai Motor Group Singapore Global Innovation Center (HMGICS)'. Previously, the Ioniq 5 also swept the '2023 Car of the Year' award conducted by Singapore's largest automotive portal, SG CarMart.

A Hyundai Motor official said, "It is an honor that the Ioniq 5, produced in Singapore, a hub for future mobility production and technological innovation, was selected as Car of the Year," adding, "Based on this award, we will strengthen our position as a leading electric vehicle brand."
