Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated in his 2024 New Year's address, “Dongdaemun-gu, known as the ‘First Neighborhood Outside the Four Great Gates’ with a history spanning 600 years, holds infinite potential.” He added, “We will vigorously move forward to achieve the district administration goals of a pleasant, safe, and transparent Dongdaemun-gu by joining hands with our residents.”
To this end, Mayor Lee said, “▲Walking together with more vulnerable groups such as low-income families and single-person households ▲Expanding childbirth and childcare support projects to ease the burden on mothers and fathers, and making it a city good for raising children through the highest level of educational expense support among autonomous districts.”
He continued, “▲Activating festivals enjoyed together with residents to create a livable city where people can enjoy leisure ▲Transforming into a walkable city through continuous promotion of the ‘City of Flowers’ and ‘Street Vendor Maintenance’ ▲Leading the development of eastern Seoul with a focus on the Cheongnyangni complex development.”
Dongdaemun-gu, which was the first autonomous district in Seoul to declare itself a ‘carbon-neutral city’ and is leading the way in establishing a low-carbon living foundation, is preparing to leap into a smart future city that supports the healthy and safe lives of its residents by actively introducing smart technologies such as ▲smart senior centers ▲AI welfare services ▲rehabilitation robots into proactive administration.

Dear 340,000 residents of Dongdaemun-gu,
This is Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu.
As we bid farewell to the year 2023, the Year of the Black Rabbit (Gye-myo), which began with hope and expectation,
the new year 2024, the Year of the Green Dragon (Gap-jin), full of change and newness, has dawned.
On this year of the soaring Blue Dragon, I wish your homes be filled with happiness and that all your hopes come true.
One year and six months have passed since the launch of the 8th elected administration, and changes are occurring in every region. The district administration goal of creating a ‘pleasant, safe, and transparent’ Dongdaemun-gu has taken root.
In 2024, we will join hands with residents and move forward vigorously toward a better future for Dongdaemun-gu.
We will expand communication spaces for the elderly and walk together with more vulnerable groups such as low-income families, single-person households, and people with disabilities.
We will expand childbirth and childcare support projects to ease the burden on mothers and fathers, and strengthen public education by providing the highest level of educational expense support among Seoul’s autonomous districts, making it a city good for raising children.
Additionally, we will activate festivals enjoyed together with residents and provide diverse cultural content to create a livable city where people can enjoy leisure.
Respected residents of Dongdaemun-gu,
Dongdaemun-gu, known as the ‘First Neighborhood Outside the Four Great Gates,’ breathes with 600 years of history and holds infinite
potential.
Through the continuous promotion of the ‘City of Flowers’ project and the maintenance of illegal and non-operating street vendors, Dongdaemun-gu will transform into a walkable city,
and we will lead the development of eastern Seoul centered on the Cheongnyangni complex development.
As the first autonomous district in Seoul to declare itself a ‘carbon-neutral city’ and take the lead in establishing a low-carbon living foundation, we will proactively introduce advanced technologies into administration, such as smart senior centers, AI welfare services, and rehabilitation robots, supporting healthy and safe lives.
Together with the 340,000 residents, we will create the smart transformation of Dongdaemun-gu into a sustainable future city.
