Expecting a Local Landmark Equipped with Modern Stores and Parking Lots
Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, officially marked the relaunch of Yeongdeok Market as a premium market by holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of Yeongdeok Market, which was destroyed by fire two years ago, on the 28th.
Yeongdeok Market suffered a devastating fire in the early morning of September 4, 2021, which completely burned down 80 stores and the entire market building.
However, Yeongdeok-gun responded immediately by setting up a temporary market to support the livelihoods of merchants and swiftly focused administrative efforts on reconstruction, securing a total budget of 30 billion KRW through the selection of three public contest projects.
In addition, Gyeongbuk Province Governor Lee Cheol-woo personally visited Yeongdeok Market, pledged active support for the reconstruction, and followed through on this commitment.
Since then, Yeongdeok Market has undergone detailed investigations, design work, and demolition stages for reconstruction, officially signaling the start of its rebirth as a premium market on this day.
The reconstructed Yeongdeok Market will be built on a 12,448㎡ site with a total floor area of 5,769㎡ over two floors. The first floor will feature 54 to 60 modular stores that are flexible and expandable, while the second floor will house a food court, a kids caf?, and a vitality center equipped with club rooms.
Notably, a dedicated modern shopping mall-style parking lot with three levels and a total area of 4,168㎡ will accommodate 220 vehicles, enhancing convenience for visitors.
About 150 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Lee Dal-hee, Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs; Kim Gwang-yeol, Mayor of Yeongdeok-gun; Hwang Jae-cheol, Chair of the Budget and Accounts Committee of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council; Son Deok-su, Chair of the Yeongdeok County Council; members of the Yeongdeok Market Merchants Association; and local residents, celebrating the reconstruction of Yeongdeok Market.
At the event, Mayor Kim Gwang-yeol said, “This groundbreaking ceremony marks the starting line for Yeongdeok Market to open a new future and be reborn as a premium market. We will unite all administrative capabilities of Yeongdeok-gun and the hopes of our residents to ensure that the revitalized Yeongdeok Market boosts the local economy and becomes a landmark symbolizing Yeongdeok-gun.”
