From next year, residents of islands in Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do, will be able to travel between islands for 1,000 won.

First, when island residents use ferries to travel to other islands within the jurisdiction, a fare of 1,000 won will be applied.

Additionally, Yeosu citizens and registered foreign residents will receive a 50% discount on ferry fares even when using ferries (Hallyeo 3-ho, Yeoja-ho) with fares over 3,000 won.

However, vehicle fares will continue to be supported only for island residents as before.

Until now, Yeosu City applied the 1,000 won fare only to residents registered on the islands, while Yeosu citizens and registered foreign residents received a 50% discount only on passenger ferry fares.

Because ferry and ferryboat fare supports were applied differently, ferryboat users had consistently raised complaints about fare discounts.

In response, Yeosu City amended the “Yeosu City Ordinance on Ferry Fare Support for Island Residents, etc.” in September to establish the legal basis for ferry fare discounts, and introduced the computerized ticketing system of the Maritime Association, which supports passenger ferry fares, to ferryboats as well, enabling fare discounts.

Furthermore, ahead of the implementation on January 1st next year, on the 26th, training on the use of the computerized ticketing system was conducted for relevant eup/myeon/dong staff and ferry operators, and boarding the relevant ferries to check the issuance of tickets via wireless terminals was carried out to ensure smooth implementation.

Jeong Gi-myeong, Mayor of Yeosu City, said, “This measure is expected to contribute not only to securing universal mobility rights for island residents but also to improving maritime transportation convenience through fare discounts for ferry users.”
