Statue of Shakira Erected in Barranquilla, Colombia
Inscribed with Phrase Borrowed from 'Hips Don't Lie'
A statue of Shakira, known as the 'Queen of Latin Pop,' has been erected in her hometown, drawing attention.
On the 27th (local time), major foreign media reported that a statue representing Shakira was unveiled the previous day in Barranquilla, a city on the northern Caribbean coast of Colombia.
The work is a massive 6.5-meter statue created through a collaboration between artist Ino Marquez and about 30 local art university students, primarily using bronze. The statue depicts Shakira wearing a bikini top and a long skirt, with her upper body exposed, performing a dance move with both hands clasped above her head and one hip jutting out.
At the base of the statue, there is an inscription borrowed from Shakira's hit song "Hips Don't Lie," which reads: "Hips that don't lie, unique talent, a voice that moves the public." Regarding the unveiling ceremony, Shakira expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am happy to share this joy with my parents on my mother's birthday," and added, "This is overwhelming for me."
Meanwhile, Shakira debuted in 1991 with her album "Magia" and has released numerous hits, including the official 2010 South Africa World Cup anthem "Waka Waka." She enjoys great popularity worldwide, especially in Latin America and Europe, and is the first artist to perform at three consecutive World Cup closing ceremonies: Germany in 2006, South Africa in 2010, and Brazil in 2014.
Shakira lived with Spanish national football player Gerard Piqu? for 11 years and had two children with him. After discovering his infidelity, she separated from him last year and released a new song criticizing Piqu? and his new girlfriend, which set a record for views by genre on YouTube. Recently, after being indicted in Spain on charges of large-scale tax evasion, she avoided imprisonment by agreeing to pay a fine of 7.3 million euros (approximately 10.3 billion KRW).
