Chinese video platform TikTok, accused of interfering in the Taiwan presidential election, has teamed up with experts to develop self-regulatory measures to filter out fake news.
On the 27th (local time), Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that TikTok had installed a '2024 Election Guide' within its application the previous day. This program was created in collaboration with MyGoPen, a Taiwan-based organization certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN).
A notable feature is that when users search for election-related information or watch related videos, they are directed to the election guide. The election guide includes links to Taiwan's Central Election Commission and allows users to report fake news immediately.
TikTok stated, "We have established a dedicated channel where Taiwan's Central Election Commission and police can report content that may violate election laws," adding, "We prohibit all fake news that can harm individuals or society, regardless of intent."
Meanwhile, the Taiwan presidential election is scheduled for the 13th of next month. The election is taking place in a two-way contest between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party candidate with a pro-independence stance and the opposition Kuomintang candidate with a pro-China stance.
