Yangcheon-gu to Host 'Yongwangsan Sunrise Festival' for the New Year of Gapjin

Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that the "2024 Yongwangsan Sunrise Festival" will be held at 7 a.m. on January 1st around Yongwangsan.

Held at Yongwangsan Neighborhood Park and Yongwangjeong, renowned spots for sunrise and sunset views in the southwest area, this event is composed of various cultural performances and side programs to pray for the unity and happiness of the residents in the Year of the Blue Dragon, Gapjin year.

The festival will begin with a pungmulpae street parade and a popera congratulatory performance, followed by a large drum performance wishing for Yangcheon’s hope, future, and development, a sunrise countdown and viewing, a three cheers of hope, and sharing of New Year’s rice cakes. Notably, this year a drone banner will be flown above the stage to deliver a message of hopeful leap and provide a unique spectacle.

Side events include ▲writing New Year’s wish notes ▲New Year fortune-telling with tarot cards ▲writing New Year’s wish phrases and family mottos in stylish calligraphy ▲hitting the wish drum ▲photo zones with Haewoori and the Blue Dragon ▲lighting the way for the New Year with Cheongsachorong lanterns, offering a variety of enjoyable activities.

Additionally, the New Year’s wish notes filled with residents’ earnest hopes will be displayed in the first-floor lobby of the district office for a week after the sunrise festival ends. They will be used in an event during the Jeongwol Daeboreum festival in February, where the notes will be burned along with a moon house to drive away bad luck and pray for blessings.

For safe operation and order maintenance, the district will divide the venue into zones and deploy over 130 safety management personnel and support staff from related organizations throughout the site. Double safety facilities will be installed around Yongwangjeong to thoroughly prevent safety accidents caused by the crowd density during the sunrise viewing. Furthermore, the number of staff operating the popular side events will be increased to minimize waiting times.

On the same day at 7 a.m., sunrise events will also be held with local residents at Neunggolsan in Sinwol 3-dong, Jiyangsan in Sinwol 7-dong, Sinjeongsan in Sinjeong 3-dong, and Galsan in Sinjeong 7-dong.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We will carefully prepare with residents’ safety as the top priority so that everyone can start a hopeful new year at the ‘Yongwangsan Sunrise Festival,’ a famous sunrise spot in Yangcheon-gu.” He added, “In the coming new year, I hope every household in Yangcheon is filled with health and happiness, and we will do our best to leap forward vigorously like the energy of the Blue Dragon.”
