Enhancing Employment Skills and Supporting Social Participation

National Pukyong University has completed the KOICA Civil Society Cooperation Program assisting Myanmar refugees in Thailand.


The KOICA Civil Society Cooperation Program Team at National Pukyong University (Director Jeong Beop-mo, Professor of the Department of International Area Studies) announced on the 26th that it has concluded the first year of the "Thailand-Myanmar Border Region Migrant Youth Social Participation Enhancement Project," which was conducted from April to the end of this month.


The team was selected for this project under the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Civil Society Cooperation Program in consortium with the Global Sharing Movement Corporation, receiving a total of 350 million KRW in funding from April until December next year to implement the project.

Through this project, the team developed local Thai language education and international development cooperation curricula to enhance the employment capabilities of Myanmar refugee youth who migrated from Myanmar to Thailand, and deployed specialized faculty in the field of development cooperation to conduct the education.


A total of 150 local youths participated in the project, including 100 in local language education and 50 in international development cooperation education. The program offered included △ resume and self-introduction letter writing training △ interview training △ field-specific mentoring △ international development cooperation education △ interview training and mock interviews △ briefings by local related organizations △ operation of a career information platform △ workshops with related institutions.


From the 10th to the 16th of this month, project team members visited Mae Sot, Thailand, to interview students participating in the international development cooperation education about their experiences and impressions, and observed a Thai language speaking contest held for students who completed 160 hours of local language education.


The KOICA Civil Society Cooperation Program Team at National Pukyong University plans to analyze this year’s project outcomes and improvement measures to support the enhancement of social participation capabilities of local students in Thailand through the second year of the project next year.
