Seoul Tops Per Capita Personal Income Again... How Much Do They Earn?

Seoul Ranks 1st with Personal Income of 26.11 Million KRW per Capita
Holding Top Spot for 6 Consecutive Years Since 2017
Capital Region Accounts for 52.5% of Total Regional Income, Over Half

The city with the highest per capita personal income was again Seoul. According to the '2022 Regional Income' report released by Statistics Korea on the 22nd, Seoul recorded 26.11 million KRW, the highest among the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces. This marks the sixth consecutive year Seoul has ranked first since 2017. Personal income is calculated by dividing the total household disposable income by the population.

The national average per capita income was 23.99 million KRW. Following Seoul were Ulsan (26.07 million KRW), Daejeon (24.22 million KRW), and Gwangju (23.67 million KRW). The lowest was Jeju (21.51 million KRW).

Last year, the national regional gross income reached 2,197 trillion KRW, a 4.3% increase from the previous year. Regional gross income is calculated by subtracting the value of goods and services imported from outside the region from the regional gross domestic product. The phenomenon of 'capital region concentration' was evident. The capital region, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon, accounted for 52.5%, more than half. Meanwhile, private consumption in all 17 metropolitan cities and provinces increased by 4.3% compared to the previous year. This is attributed to the resumption of daily activities following the end of the COVID-19 pandemic period.
