On the 21st, Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it won the Gold Award, the highest prize in the policy category, at the '2023 4th Local Autonomy Awards' held on the 19th at Take Hotel in Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do.
Co-hosted by the Local Autonomy Decentralization Local Government Council, Gwangmyeong-si, and the Local Autonomy Decentralization University, and sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, this event was planned under the theme of 'Government Efforts to Prevent Local Extinction and Promote Autonomy,' aiming to select and share excellent cases from various regions to open a true era of local autonomy.
In this competition, the government and institution category involved 1,509 resident judges from 98 local governments nationwide, who selected five outstanding cases through a two-round 'tournament' style process, followed by a final on-site evaluation.
On the day, Dong-gu received high praise for leading substantial progress in local autonomy by creating and operating 'Maeul Sarangchae,' the nation's only resident-led communication and sharing village welfare hub, earning the highest honor.
A Dong-gu official said, "We are very satisfied that 'Maeul Sarangchae,' a representative resident sharing and communication hub unique to Dong-gu, has been recognized as a nationwide model case," adding, "We will continue to actively support Maeul Sarangchae so that it can contribute to strengthening resident capabilities and village development."
