G-Dragon Cleared of Drug Charges
"Will Make a Comeback Next Year"
Recently acquitted of drug use allegations, singer G-Dragon (real name Kwon Ji-yong) announced that he will engage in public service activities to eradicate drugs.
On the 21st, G-Dragon stated in a handwritten letter released through his new agency Galaxy Corporation, "I want to stand with those who suffer from the world's prejudice and injustice and create a society where everyone is equally and fairly respected," and announced plans to establish a foundation to combat drugs.
He said, "Through this incident, I have come to see things I had not seen before," adding, "I learned the heartbreaking fact that the average number of drug offenders per year reaches 20,000, youth drug cases are continuously increasing, and among those 20,000 offenders, fewer than 500 receive treatment."
He continued, "Therefore, I thought I must take action. For the youth who are exposed defenselessly, I want to actively work toward eradicating drugs," and stated, "I will play a systemic role protecting them as someone's older brother, elder brother, or colleague so that the unfair experiences of the powerless and weak do not repeat."
G-Dragon said the foundation's first donation will be made under the name of Big Bang's fandom, 'VIP.' He also added, "I will make a comeback next year and fulfill both my responsibilities as an artist and my social responsibilities."
Earlier, the Incheon Police Department's Narcotics Crime Investigation Unit announced on the 19th that G-Dragon, who was booked without detention on drug charges under the Narcotics Control Act, was decided not to be prosecuted the previous day.
The police investigated G-Dragon based on the testimony of A, a manager of an entertainment establishment, in October. However, G-Dragon was cleared of charges after both a simple reagent test on urine and other samples and a detailed examination of body hair by the National Forensic Service all returned negative results.
Nevertheless, indiscriminate malicious comments toward G-Dragon have continued even after the case was closed. In response, Cho Seong-hae, director of Galaxy Corporation, stated, "From today until midnight on December 28, we ask that malicious comments, false information, and defamatory posts circulating on the internet be deleted or corrected," adding, "After that, we will respond strongly and without leniency according to the principle of zero tolerance."
