The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 20th at 8 p.m. that the heavy snow crisis alert level has been raised from 'Caution' to 'Warning' and the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has been elevated to Level 2.
This measure was taken in response to forecasts predicting heavy snowfall centered around the Chungcheong region, Jeolla region, and Jeju Island until the 22nd. Snowfall amounts of 5?15 cm are expected in the Chungcheong region, 5?30 cm in western Jeonbuk, 5?20 cm in Gwangju and western Jeonnam, and 10?20 cm in eastern and mid-mountain areas of Jeju.
The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters urged thorough snow removal and de-icing operations to prevent casualties and property damage caused by the heavy snow, as well as to avoid traffic inconveniences during the morning commute. They also emphasized that related agencies, including military units, should actively provide necessary personnel and equipment upon requests from local governments. The government plans to strengthen public awareness campaigns on heavy snow response guidelines and mobilize all available resources to respond thoroughly in order to minimize damage caused by the heavy snow.
On the same day, as heavy snow warnings were issued for the Chungcheong and Jeolla regions, the government raised the heavy snow crisis alert level from 'Interest' to 'Caution' at 10 a.m. and activated Level 1 of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.
