Various Cultural and Art Events Held Nationwide with the Theme of 'Walking'
This year, various exhibitions with the theme of 'walking' were held nationwide. Themed trails where visitors can enjoy artworks such as media art while walking also gained popularity.
Salt Dock 2014, an art creation studio located in Buk-gu, Ulsan, will hold an exhibition titled 'Walking with Ilgopmandi and 12 Views through Art' from the 26th to the 30th at the Salt Dock Small Art Museum within the studio. Ten resident artists who have passed through Salt Dock 2014 explored the 'Ilgopmandi 12 Views,' a famous spot in Buk-gu, and created stamp artworks symbolizing each location. The Ilgopmandi in Buk-gu includes Hoammandi, Muryongsan, Dongdaesan, Cheonmasan, Ugasan, Dongchuksan, and Gibaksan Fortress. The 12 views include Myeongchon Reed Cluster, Gangdong Hwaam Columnar Jointing, and Dalcheon Ironworks, among others. Visitors can directly stamp and take home the actual stamps at the exhibition.
Saltnaru2014, an art creation studio located in Buk-gu, Ulsan, will hold the exhibition "Ilgopmandi and 12 Views, Walking with Art" at the Saltnaru Small Art Museum within the studio from the 26th to the 30th.
The Koreana Museum of Art in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, celebrated its 20th anniversary by hosting the international curated exhibition 'Step×Step' until the end of last month. The exhibition explored how walking, the most everyday human act, inspired artists. It showcased 15 works by seven teams of contemporary artists from five countries: Kang Seokyung and Shin Jehyeon (Korea), Bruce Nauman and Every Ocean Hughes (USA), Chai Mingliang (Malaysia), Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz (Germany), and Klara Liden (Sweden). Bruce Nauman, selected as one of Time magazine's '100 Most Influential People in the World,' presented his early studio experimental video 'Walking in Contrapposto Pose.' The work focuses on the artist's bodily actions rather than objects by repeatedly walking with exaggerated and uncomfortable steps, mimicking the contrapposto pose (a stance where weight is placed on one leg while the other is relaxed) applied in Western classical sculptures.

The National Asia Culture Center (ACC) in Dong-gu, Gwangju, held the exhibition 'Walking, Wandering' last September. It featured 25 works by 13 contemporary artists from six countries: Korea, Guatemala, Belgium, Serbia, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. The exhibition addressed various aspects of walking, pedestrian stories, the history and contemporary landscapes of cities encountered on the road, and the social and cultural issues embedded within. Renowned international artists such as Marina Abramovi?, Regina Jos? Galindo, and Francis Al?s participated, attracting significant attention. Marina Abramovi? (Serbia), who contributed to establishing performance as a genre of contemporary art, gained attention with her work 'The Lovers: Walking the Great Wall.' The piece is a video documenting the process of her and her partner Ulay walking from both ends of the Great Wall of China, meeting in the middle, and then parting ways over 90 days.
Various events where people walked the streets to appreciate cultural and artistic works were held across the country. In Jeju, the 'Seogwipo Moonlight Hayoung Walking Trail' festival was held last month to celebrate 'Pedestrian Day' (November 11). Participants enjoyed media art works inspired by Lee Jung-seop's art and visited various sites such as Cheonjeyeon Waterfall Observatory, Seogwipo Port, and Seogwipoguji. In the same month, the Gyeongnam Miryang Cultural Tourism Foundation held the 'Miryang Walk' event in Miryang, Gyeongnam. Participants engaged in 'plogging'?picking up trash while walking?along the Miryang Arirang Trail and viewed the Haechun Sangsanru media art.
