Expanding to 40 road heating lines and 4 automatic brine spraying devices for rapid response to snow removal on side roads through private contracts... Operating the Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters with 2,044 tons of deicing agents, 228 snow removal equipment, and 1,445 personnel
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is expanding its smart snow removal system, including road heating cables and automatic brine spraying devices, and is making every effort to ensure the safety of residents during the winter season.
With sudden heavy snowfall and cold waves becoming more frequent due to recent climate change, Seongdong-gu operates its Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters 24 hours a day. Based on secured resources such as 2,044 tons of deicing agents, 1,445 personnel, and 228 snow removal equipment, the district minimizes residents' inconvenience through prompt snow removal operations.
This winter, to minimize residents' inconvenience through rapid snow removal and to carry out eco-friendly snow removal work, the district will add road heating cable systems at 18 additional locations on steep slopes, operating a total of 40 locations covering 7.43 km of road heating cables. Also, the automatic brine spraying devices, first installed in 2022 at one location, will be expanded to four locations, operating over a total distance of 1.64 km. The automatic brine spraying device detects snowfall through road weather sensors and automatically sprays brine.
Snow removal private services will also be expanded across all 17 neighborhoods, with designated routes assigned to each neighborhood to promptly carry out snow removal when it snows. Snow removal work on side roads and sidewalks, which were relatively lower priority compared to main roads and steep slopes, will be expanded to reduce work fatigue caused by long-term emergency duty of staff and to alleviate manpower shortages at neighborhood community centers.
Additionally, 488 snow removal boxes have been placed on major roads and expected icy sections for residents to use autonomously during emergencies. The district will also support 146 tons of deicing agents to 148 apartment complexes and other multi-family housing units to promote a snow removal culture together with residents.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Sudden heavy snowfall accompanied by cold waves is expected to occur frequently due to recent abnormal weather. Protecting residents' safety from disasters is the duty of local government heads, and we will devise thorough countermeasures and strive to ensure everyone can spend a warm and safe winter.”
