Dongdaemun-gu Accelerates Carbon Neutrality with All Employees Participating in Reducing Single-Use Products

To create a carbon-neutral government building, Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) has launched an initiative to reduce the use of disposable products.

On the 18th, to promote the use of personal cups within the building and improve employees' awareness of disposable product usage, a "Reduce Disposable Products Campaign" was held in the first-floor lobby of the government building from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., coinciding with employees' arrival time.

The campaign began with the mayor and about 10 senior officials signing a "Pledge to Reduce Disposable Product Usage."

The pledge includes commitments such as ▲not bringing disposable cups into the building and using reusable cups or tumblers ▲promoting paperless meetings and refraining from purchasing or using disposable products during events ▲prioritizing the purchase of recycled and eco-friendly green office supplies ▲thoroughly separating and disposing of disposable products when their use is unavoidable, demonstrating leadership from senior officials in practicing carbon neutrality.

Additionally, to encourage the use of tumblers at the caf?, 200 employees who ordered drinks using their personal tumblers at the Dorandoran Caf? on the first floor were given free coffee, and employees participating in the "One Ton Greenhouse Gas Reduction Pledge per Person" were provided with tumbler bags, increasing employee engagement.

The "One Ton Greenhouse Gas Reduction per Person" initiative involves setting and pledging to practice tasks in four areas?resources, electricity, transportation, and heating/cooling?such as ▲using personal cups instead of paper cups ▲using high-efficiency products ▲using public transportation ▲reducing heating and cooling usage time, aiming to reduce carbon emissions.

To raise awareness of environmental issues, award-winning works from the "Together Green Carbon Neutral City Drawing Contest" held last November were displayed in the first-floor lobby.

Meanwhile, the district is leading carbon neutrality through various activities such as ▲offering beverage discounts when using tumblers at the government building caf? ▲installing and operating tumbler washing machines ▲operating a weekly "Vegetarian Day" ▲mandatory purchase of green products. Furthermore, to establish a culture of reducing disposable product use within the building, monitoring of disposable product usage will be strengthened, and starting January next year, bringing disposable products into the building will be restricted.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "The small act of using personal tumblers instead of disposable cups will be a step closer to realizing carbon neutrality. We will strive to lead by example in public institutions by reducing disposable product use and gradually spread the culture of practicing carbon neutrality to the private sector, enabling us to advance as a sustainable carbon-neutral city."
