Chosun University of Science and Technology Hosts 2023 Capstone Design Competition

Chosun Institute of Science and Technology held the 2023 Capstone Design Competition and Exhibition 'JOY Festival.'

Capstone Design is a team project where students plan, design, and produce works based on the major knowledge and skills they have learned to solve problems. It is conducted with the purpose of improving students' practical skills and enhancing their problem-solving abilities.

On the 18th, Chosun Institute of Science and Technology held the main event at Gibong Hall in Building 3 and exhibited capstone design works from a total of 47 teams over two days, including 19 teams from engineering fields, 12 teams from non-engineering fields, and 16 interdisciplinary teams.

This competition was organized to motivate students by judging and awarding outstanding works among capstone design projects and to spread the achievements externally by exhibiting and promoting them.

In particular, they established a creative convergence industry-linked education model that operates interdisciplinary capstone designs involving two or more departments connected with partner industries and supports solution planning, HR mentoring, and production of works based on topics proposed by 30 companies and industrial partners.

In this competition, the EV Challenger team, which developed an EV high-voltage battery cell balancing device that enhances the lifespan and shortens the charging time of EV high-voltage batteries, and the JOY Hanmoonchul team, which developed a nighttime secondary accident prevention system that helps prevent secondary accidents by spraying fluorescent substances during car accidents, attracted attention.

Additionally, various ideas and tangible implementations were showcased, including an eco-friendly drone snow removal system using coffee grounds, a combined watch and pill container that alerts medication times, functional cosmetics based on chitosan microspheres containing antioxidants for modern people exposed to everyday radiation, a device for IoT sensor data loggers that enhances the effectiveness of greenhouse gas reduction, a smart umbrella stand that automatically opens and closes based on weather forecasts, a metaverse that builds real environments linked with XR, and e-sports tournament planning.

Chosun Gye, President of Chosun Institute of Science and Technology, stated, "Seeing the capstone design results of students who solved industrial field problems linked with their major curriculum, I feel the fruits of nurturing talents equipped with creativity, planning skills, and technical ability," and added, "We will continue to establish organic cooperation systems with companies and promote programs that connect educational achievements with regional and industrial development."
