Confirmation Hearing
Song Mi-ryeong, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, expressed her position on the 18th that she "agrees with the Dog Meat Consumption Ban Act." However, Song stated, "I think it is excessive for the government to necessarily provide compensation."
At the confirmation hearing held that day, when asked, "Do you agree with the Dog Meat Consumption Ban Act?" Song responded, "Of course." However, she emphasized, "I believe support should be provided to the greatest extent within a reasonable scope, but the obligation to compensate is excessive."
Regarding the introduction of the 'Agricultural Product Price Guarantee System,' she expressed opposition. Song said, "I think price stabilization is necessary, but rather than guaranteeing prices as a system, I believe the method can be different," adding, "If a minimum price is introduced for all agricultural products, it could lead to convenience in farming or concentration on certain agricultural products, resulting in overproduction of specific products."
Regarding rice prices, she emphasized the need to "maintain the 200,000 won level." This year, the farm gate price of rice rose to an average of 210,556 won per 80kg in October but gradually declined to the 190,000 won range last month. Song stated, "I will strive to maintain the 200,000 won level," and added, "We will take necessary measures while monitoring market conditions."
