Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is set to provide 6,940 public sector jobs to senior citizens in the district in the new year of Gapjin.
On the 18th, Nam-gu announced, "To ensure a vibrant retirement life for seniors and provide opportunities to work in various fields, we will invest 29.5 billion KRW to actively promote the 2024 Senior Job and Social Activity Support Project."
The job categories offered to seniors next year include four types: public interest activity type, social service type, market type, and employment referral type.
The project implementing organizations include 16 institutions and 98 workplaces within the district, such as Nam-gu Senior Club, Chorok Senior Welfare Center, Korea Senior Citizens Association Nam-gu Branch, Nam-gu Senior Welfare Center, Gwangju Disabled Rights Association, and Gwangju Park Senior Welfare Center, all recently selected through an open recruitment process.
First, in the public interest activity type, jobs will be provided to 5,151 seniors aged 65 or older who reside in Nam-gu according to their resident registration, maintain health that does not interfere with job performance, and receive basic pension benefits.
They will perform tasks such as assisting in childcare facilities, supporting traffic safety in school zones of elementary, middle, and high schools, assisting with elementary school meals, managing libraries, supporting electric vehicle charging stations, and maintaining park environments.
The social service type jobs are for physically healthy seniors aged 65 or older residing in Nam-gu, with some projects allowing participation from seniors aged 60 or older.
A total of 1,092 seniors will participate, taking roles such as conducting traffic safety data surveys, serving as senior fire safety guardians, and assisting in related facilities for kindergartens, disabled persons, and the elderly.
In the market type and employment referral type categories, the projects target healthy seniors aged 60 or older residing in Nam-gu, providing jobs to 510 and 187 seniors respectively.
For the market type, participants join business units operated by the project implementing organizations, working in cafes, managing and cleaning rental housing, sewing, and producing perilla oil and Myeongaju walking sticks.
Additionally, seniors participating in the employment referral type complete certain training or related job training at the Nam-gu Senior Club before working as security guards, cleaners, or parking management staff.
A Nam-gu official stated, "We will do our best to promote the public sector job projects next year to ensure a vibrant retirement life for our seniors."
