Busan City Selects 13 'Busan Future Heritage' Sites This Year

Valuable Heritage to Leave for Future Generations... A Total of 85 Cases Since 2019

Plans to Share the Value of Busan Future Heritage through Sign Installation, Promotional Video Production, and Exploration Programs

Busan City has selected 13 tangible and intangible heritage items that embody Busan's identity and uniqueness as the 2023 'Busan Future Heritage.'

Busan City Selects 13 'Busan Future Heritage' Sites This Year Busan City Hall.

'Busan Future Heritage' refers to tangible and intangible cultural heritage containing events, figures, or stories set against the backdrop of modern and contemporary Busan, which hold value to be passed on to future generations. These are finally selected through the deliberation of the Busan Future Heritage Preservation Committee.


Since 2019, a total of 85 heritage items have been selected up to this year.


The 13 newly selected Busan Future Heritage items include ▲ 'Jungang Park (formerly Daeshin Park),' the site of Goweon Gyunsan Water Source, the oldest water supply facility in Korea ▲ 'Catholic Center,' which served as a cultural sharing space for Busan citizens during times of scarce cultural facilities ▲ 'Busan Cooperative Fish Market,' the largest mountain fish market in Korea, among others.


The city discovered a preliminary list of 100 candidates across five fields: history, urban development, industry, culture and arts, and everyday culture through research projects and public submissions. Then, reflecting opinions from internal and external experts, the list was narrowed down to 50 candidates.


Subsequently, through a public survey, deliberation by the Busan Future Heritage Preservation Committee, and consent procedures with owners, a final list of 25 candidates was established. On November 30, the committee conducted the final review and selected 13 items as 'Busan Future Heritage.'


The 13 selected items are categorized as follows: in the 'History' field, ▲ Air-raid Shelter in Jwacheon-dong (Dong-gu); in the 'Urban' field, ▲ Jungang Park (formerly Daeshin Park, Seo-gu); in the 'Industry' field, ▲ Bugwan Ferry (Dong-gu); in the 'Culture and Arts' field, ▲ Catholic Center (Jung-gu); and in the 'Everyday Culture' field, ▲ Busan Haenyeo (Busan Coast) ▲ Bujeon Market (Busanjin-gu) ▲ Busan Cooperative Fish Market (Seo-gu) ▲ Dried Yellow Croaker (Gogalbi) ▲ Busanjin Market (Dong-gu) ▲ Beomil-dong Sewing Machine Street (Dong-gu) ▲ Choryang Pork Rib Alley (Dong-gu) ▲ Bongnae Elementary School (formerly Kaesong School, Jung-gu) ▲ Jwacheon-dong Furniture Street (Dong-gu).


The city plans to introduce the selected future heritage items through its website and share their value with citizens by installing markers, producing promotional videos, and operating exploration programs.


Kim Ki-hwan, Director of the Culture and Sports Bureau, stated, “Through the Busan Future Heritage selected this time, we will share the common memories and emotions created by Busan people across various generations, and strive to widely spread Busan’s future value that continuously develops by connecting the past, present, and future to all citizens.”
