Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is set to intensify efforts to manage 98 snow removal vulnerable areas by neighborhood and 59 major road routes as a cold wave and heavy snowfall are expected to become full-scale starting this weekend.
Additionally, an automatic brine spraying device will be operated on hills with steep slopes, such as Subak-ro, to prevent accidents like vehicle skidding.
On the 15th, Nam-gu announced, "To promptly respond to natural disasters in winter and minimize casualties and property damage, we will fully implement winter natural disaster countermeasures through the first quarter of next year," adding, "Before implementing these measures, we have completed preliminary inspections of steep slopes within the district, disaster warning systems, snow removal equipment, and materials."
First, to minimize residents' inconvenience caused by the cold wave and heavy snowfall, Nam-gu will operate village snow removal teams composed of 1,069 members, including self-governing organization members and public officials, by neighborhood to focus on managing snow removal vulnerable areas in each village.
The 98 snow removal vulnerable zones across 17 neighborhoods include 10 locations in Wolsan 4-dong, 8 in Sajik-dong, 6 each in Yangnim-dong and Bongseon 2-dong, and 4 each in Bangnim 1 and 2-dong and Bongseon 1-dong. The total length of all sections managed by the village snow removal teams reaches 36.5 km.
When a heavy snow advisory or warning is issued and snowfall accumulates over 5 cm, these teams will immediately dispatch to the sites to swiftly clear snow piled up on residential back roads and hill paths.
In particular, in the rural Daechon area, three graders attached to tractors recently purchased for snow removal will be used to independently work on village alleys and icy sections.
Snow removal work on major roads within the district will also be intensified to resolve traffic chaos caused by heavy snowfall and prevent accidents on icy sections.
Six sections, including Seomun-daero from Songam Overpass to Songwon-daero, Hyodeok-ro Chilgujae at the Hwasun boundary, Bongseon-ro Yongsan Tunnel, and Subakdeung-ro, will be the first to receive deployment of various snow removal equipment and personnel when heavy snow falls.
Furthermore, 59 routes totaling 88 km, including Seomun-daero, Daenam-daero, Bongseon-ro, Wolsan-ro, Cheonbyeon-jwa-ro, Doknip-ro, and Gwangbokmaeul-gil, which have heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the city center, will be managed as priority snow removal sections. Snow removal vehicles will also be deployed to 16 locations along the boundaries with Naju, Hwasun, Dong-gu, and Seo-gu.
In addition, a 500 m section of Subakdeung-ro, a 700 m section of Jesuk-ro, and a 210 m section of Bongseon-ro, all located on hill roads, will be managed for road icing through 117 automatic brine spray nozzles.
A Nam-gu official stated, "We will focus our capabilities on the sites of heavy snowfall and cold waves to protect residents' precious lives and property and minimize traffic disruptions," adding, "We will do our best to make Nam-gu a safe district."
