Mokpo National University Wins Top Award for '1000 Won Breakfast' Project

Operating a 'Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant' Since Last March

National Mokpo University (President Song Ha-cheol) received the Grand Prize at the 2023 1000-Won Breakfast Best Practice Awards ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

According to Mokpo University on the 15th, the 1000-Won Breakfast project is a program that provides breakfast costing 1000 won to college students with a high rate of skipping breakfast.

National Mokpo University has been operating a "Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant" since March using the Ministry of Agriculture's 1000-Won Breakfast project to provide students who commute early by shuttle bus or live around the campus with a balanced and high-quality breakfast similar to home-cooked meals.

So far, National Mokpo University has offered buffet-style meals to operate menus preferred by students, providing rice as a base along with fried rice, scorched rice, rice cereal, rice noodles, and vegetables, salads, and fruits that are difficult for students to consume, ensuring balanced nutrition.

Because it is highly satisfactory and available at the affordable price of 1000 won, breakfast meal tickets are provided during on-campus events or occasions, and student participation through SNS certification and the "Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant" being featured in the university promotional videos have naturally promoted the program. It has been successfully operated thanks to support from local governments and university development funds, as well as voluntary donations from faculty, staff, and local community businesses.

A representative from National Mokpo University said, "It is very rewarding to see students stopping by the restaurant every morning to eat various foods, sometimes even ramen. We are grateful that the 'Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant' is operated with active support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service, local governments, and the university," adding, "We will continue to strive to sustain the 1000-Won Breakfast that students want."

Meanwhile, the satisfaction level of students with National Mokpo University's "Premium Breakfast Buffet Restaurant" is quite high. According to a survey conducted in June with 254 students and 39 faculty and staff members, 87.4% responded that they were "satisfied with the service."

Additionally, 98.3% of respondents who had used the service at least once said they "would recommend it to others," and the restaurant was visited by 7,247 people in March alone when it started operating with the new semester, with 6,000 to 7,000 users every month. It also operates during vacation periods, with about 5,000 visitors during last summer vacation.
