Trump Intensifies Sales of Products Using Mugshot
"Buy 47 and Receive the Suit Worn in the Mugshot"
Transformed into a 'Symbol of Resistance'... Party Approval Rating Tops 1st Place
Donald Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate in the United States, is profiting from selling merchandise featuring his 'mugshot' (a police identification photo of a suspect).
As part of a new promotion for the non-fungible token (NFT) product he introduced late last year, Trump announced on the 12th (local time) that he would give away pieces of the suit he wore when his mugshot was taken, according to US financial broadcaster CNBC and others.

On the same day, former President Trump announced on his social media that he had released trading cards featuring his mugshot. He stated, "If you buy 47 cards, you can get a piece of the suit I wore when the mugshot was taken." Some of the cards include his handwritten signature, and the package also includes a dinner with him at a club in Florida and accommodations in Palm Beach.
The NFT trading cards are priced at $99 each, and to receive a piece of the suit, one must purchase a total of 47 cards, amounting to $4,653 (approximately 6.13 million KRW). In a video, he promoted, "It was a great suit. Trust me. The suits were all cut up, and you will get a part of it."
Earlier, Trump became the first current or former US president to have a mugshot taken. He was booked and had his mugshot taken at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia last August after being indicted on charges of exerting undue influence to overturn the 2020 election results.
'Symbol of Resistance' Mugshot... Creating Goods to Raise Campaign Funds
Although it was an embarrassing moment, former President Trump transformed it into a 'symbol of resistance.' He began selling 'mugshot goods' such as T-shirts and coffee mugs through the online store of his 2024 presidential campaign fundraising website. The T-shirts featured the mugshot along with the phrase "Never Surrender!" and gained considerable popularity.
As a result, the Trump campaign raised $4.18 million (approximately 5.547 billion KRW) in 24 hours, promoting it as the "highest 24-hour fundraising record." It was reported that through merchandise sales and donations, they raised $20 million (approximately 26.54 billion KRW) over three weeks.
In fact, in March, when Trump was criminally charged in New York City for hush money related to a sexual misconduct scandal?the first current or former US president to face such charges?but no mugshot was taken, he produced and sold T-shirts featuring a 'fake mugshot.'
He uses the mugshot as a symbol of resistance, framing various allegations and indictments against him as 'eliminating political opponents' and 'political acts' by the Joe Biden administration.

Meanwhile, about a month before the Republican presidential primary, Trump is dominating other candidates with support exceeding the majority. According to a poll conducted by Ipsos and Reuters from the 5th to the 11th among 1,689 Republican supporters, Trump secured first place with 61% support.
President Biden, seeking re-election, criticized, "Trump is a threat to this country in many areas including civil rights and voting rights," adding, "The greatest threat is to democracy." Earlier, on the 9th, Trump sparked controversy by saying at a Republican event, "(If re-elected president) I want to be a dictator on the first day of my inauguration."
