‘Hydrogen Turbine Test Research Center’ Established in Boryeong, Chungnam... Completion by 2026

A Hydrogen Turbine Test Research Center (hereinafter referred to as the Center) will be established in Boryeong, Chungnam. Chungnam Province expects that by building the Center, it will enhance the self-reliance of power generation turbine technology, overcome the global technology gap, and move closer to realizing a carbon-neutral economy and eco-friendly energy transition as a special carbon-neutral economy road in Chungnam.

On the 14th, Chungnam Province announced that it was finally selected for the "Hydrogen Turbine Test Research Center Construction Project" recently announced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute.

Following the selection, Chungnam Province will invest a total of 48 billion KRW by 2026 to build the Center on a 14,810㎡ site in the Gwanchang Industrial Complex, Jugyo-myeon, Boryeong City.

After completion, the Center will be equipped with specialized hydrogen turbine test and evaluation equipment such as hydrogen and combustion air compressors, fuel supply systems, high-temperature and high-pressure air supply pipelines, and gas analyzers. It will conduct research and development on gas turbine hydrogen fuel conversion, improve the performance of existing power plants' gas turbines, and evaluate hydrogen turbine reliability.

In particular, Chungnam Province plans to connect a pipeline network between the Center and the Boryeong Blue Hydrogen Plant, which can produce 250,000 tons of hydrogen annually, to gain an advantage in the hydrogen turbine research field.

The expected effects of operating the Center include ▲overcoming the global gas turbine technology gap ▲early commercialization of related technologies ▲breaking the foreign gas turbine oligopoly and saving foreign currency ▲blocking leakage of core technologies ▲improving technology self-reliance ▲attracting specialized personnel.

Additionally, Chungnam Province plans to attract hydrogen turbine-related institutions and companies mainly in areas where coal-fired power plants have been closed, and by expanding related industries, it aims to simultaneously achieve regional economic revitalization and job creation.

Yu Jae-ryong, Director of the Industrial Economy Office of Chungnam Province, said, “If we develop hydrogen combustion turbines through the Center in the future, Chungnam will be able to establish power generation facilities with zero greenhouse gas emissions. To this end, Chungnam Province will focus on creating an advanced industrial complex that covers the entire cycle from research, demonstration, development, to commercialization of hydrogen turbine-related industries, thereby opening a new chapter for hydrogen turbines.”
