According to the reports, Prime Minister Orb?n stated in parliament, "A rapid EU accession for Ukraine does not align with the interests of Hungary or the EU," adding, "This idea is currently absurd, ridiculous, and not serious."

Foreign media analyzed that Orb?n's remarks sharply contrast with those of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who called for the 27 EU member states to support Ukraine following Russia's full-scale invasion in February last year.

With Prime Minister Orb?n reiterating his opposition to Ukraine's early EU accession, the issue is likely to reach a deadlock at the EU summit scheduled for June 14-15 in Brussels, Belgium. The EU plans to decide whether to start accession negotiations with Ukraine at this meeting, but unanimous consent from all 27 member states is required for this to proceed.
