'Wishing for the Return of Whales' ... Pohang City Benchmarks for Promoting the Construction of a Municipal Museum Deputy Mayor Kim Nam-il visited Yongjin Training Center located in Gwangju City on the 9th and is listening to Director Min Myung-chul explain the current status of the fossil exhibition hall and the collection materials.

The fossil exhibition hall at Yongjin Training Center (Chairman Min Myeong-cheol) displays various fossils excavated in Pohang, with whale fossils occupying a significant portion. Vice Mayor Kim's visit aimed to understand the status of natural history artifacts excavated in Pohang and the progress of the Pohang Municipal Museum construction project.

Chairman Min Myeong-cheol of Yongjin Training Center introduced the current status of the fossil exhibition hall and its collections, explaining the background and value of the whale fossils collected so far.

Chairman Min explained that the whale fossils discovered in June 1997 at the Jangseong Land Readjustment Project District in Pohang have been transferred to national ownership and are currently exhibited at this fossil exhibition hall, describing Pohang as a treasure trove of whale fossils.

After personally visiting the exhibition hall and receiving explanations, Vice Mayor Kim Nam-il said, “I hope that the entire collection of ten-million-year-old whale fossils excavated in Pohang will be planned and exhibited in Pohang to widely promote them and serve as an opportunity to expand citizens' artifact donation campaigns.” He added, “In the future, we will database the artifacts excavated in Pohang and make every effort to ensure the successful official opening of the municipal museum.”

Pohang is famous as the nation's leading Cenozoic fossil site, with various types of fossils being discovered, attracting many people interested in fossils.

Reflecting this, in November last year, the 'Pohang Geumgwangdong Formation Cenozoic Fossil Site,' a representative Cenozoic plant fossil site where more than 60 taxa of diverse plant fossils are clustered and produced, was announced as a natural monument candidate.
