Ulleung-gun Holds Communication Meeting for Education Development Special Zone

Provincial Era, Challenge to Designate Ulleung-type Education Development Zone

Nam Han-kwon, the governor of Ulleung County in South Korea, held a meeting on the 13th in the governor's office with eight members of the Ulleung County Education Development Committee to discuss the successful designation of the "Ulleung-type Education Development Special Zone."

The Education Development Special Zone is one of the 120 national tasks of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration. It is a system where local governments, education offices, universities, regional companies, and local public institutions cooperate to comprehensively support regional education innovation, local talent development, and settlement within the broader framework of regional development.

Once designated as an Education Development Special Zone, it can receive special exemptions from various regulations under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and financial support. This is expected to be the first step toward balanced regional development for Ulleung County, which is facing the crisis of local extinction, by designing various educational programs tailored to local conditions and supporting jobs linked to local industries.

During the meeting, participants discussed the vision and roles for the designation of the Ulleung-type Education Development Special Zone and agreed to continuously seek directions for educational development to overcome the local extinction crisis as partners in Ulleung's educational innovation.

All attendees unanimously emphasized the necessity of designating the "Ulleung-type Education Development Special Zone," as the policy goal of the Education Development Special Zone is to create a local settlement ecosystem that extends from care to employment.

Governor Nam Han-kwon stated, "If we aim for local educational innovation and balanced regional development, Ulleung County is the optimal candidate for the special zone," adding, "We will present a differentiated vision for the Ulleung-type Education Development Special Zone and a feasible direction. Together with our students who will grow into future leaders and our residents living in Ulleung, we will build Ulleung's educational competitiveness and achieve balanced regional development."

Ulleung County has been promoting the designation project since the 1st of this month by conducting a service to establish the Ulleung-type Education Development Special Zone model and mid- to long-term plans.
