Excellence in This Year's Ministry of Education Academic and Research Support Projects, Minister of Education Award
The ‘Marine Humanities Series (Research, Translation, Data, Citizen Lectures) Publication’ project by the Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) Team at Pukyong National University (Director Kim Chang-kyung) has been selected as an excellent achievement in the Ministry of Education’s academic and research support projects this year, as well as a representative achievement in the humanities and social sciences field.

On the 8th, the Pukyong National University HK+ Team received the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Award at the ‘2023 Ministry of Education Academic and Research Support Projects Top 50 Achievements Awards Ceremony’ held at the Koreana Hotel in Seoul, where this project was recognized as an excellent achievement and a representative achievement in the humanities and social sciences field.
Since 2017, the team has been publishing the Marine Humanities Series under the theme ‘Dynamics of Northeast Asian Marine Areas and Humanities Networks.’ In 2022, they published a total of four volumes: the research series ‘Northeast Asian Marine Areas and War: Refuge, Leaflets, Naval Battles,’ the translation series ‘The Fall of the Qing Empire and Western Merchants: Yi Hwa Yanghaeng,’ the data series ‘Qing Dynasty Drift Map,’ and the citizen lecture series ‘Goods That Crossed the Sea I.’
These series comprehensively cover various formats, materials, and subjects, enhancing the impact of Northeast Asian marine humanities in domestic and international academia, and have been recognized for their excellence, including being selected as outstanding books by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea.
In particular, the team’s efforts to utilize these project achievements for talent development by establishing university courses, operating citizen lectures, and holding exhibitions, thereby promoting the dissemination of research outcomes within the local community, have been highly evaluated.
The Ministry of Education supports academic and research projects to drive creative knowledge creation and foster a balanced academic ecosystem. Among over 13,600 project outcomes, 179 candidate projects were received through open calls and recommendations, and after comprehensive evaluation, the top 50 excellent achievements were finally selected and awarded on this day.
