Busan City announced that according to the report "Life Satisfaction of Young People in Major Cities: Focusing on the Seven Major Metropolitan Cities" published by the National Assembly Future Institute on the 4th, the job satisfaction of young people in Busan scored 7.65 points, the highest among the seven major metropolitan cities.
Satisfaction with living standards and a sense of safety in the residential environment were also high among the seven major metropolitan cities, confirming that young people’s overall happiness in life was high.
The National Assembly Future Institute pointed out in the report that "young people in metropolitan areas of the capital region feel a relatively high level of social isolation," and that "areas with a large influx of young people, such as Seoul and Incheon, tend to have relatively high frequencies of loneliness and depression," suggesting the need to develop strategies to improve the quality of life for young people.
On the other hand, young people in Busan recorded lower levels among the seven major metropolitan cities in terms of ▲loneliness (1.16 points, 6th place) and ▲frequency of depression (1.19 points, 5th place), while showing generally excellent rankings in positive indicators that have a high correlation with young people’s happiness and quality of life, such as ▲sense of safety (6.87 points, 1st place), ▲satisfaction with interpersonal relationships (6.89 points, tied 1st place), ▲sense of community belonging (6.61 points, tied 1st place), and ▲general trust (3.65 points, 1st place).
This can be analyzed as a result of Busan’s higher satisfaction compared to other metropolitan cities in residential conditions considered during the settlement process of young people, such as housing costs and convenience of public transportation, in addition to jobs, which are the overwhelming factor in youth migration.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “The happiness of organizational members is a very important factor for organizational performance, and Busan has excellent young talents with high happiness and satisfaction, which I believe will have a positive impact on corporate performance.” He added, “Busan was recently ranked the 6th happiest city in Asia by the UK’s global consulting group EIU, and it is a business-friendly city that achieved the best-ever investment attraction performance this year (3.974 trillion KRW as of the end of November 2023), with new bases such as the Lotte Shopping Logistics Center and Samsung Heavy Industries R&D Center. Building on this achievement, we will accelerate the enactment of special laws and the attraction of excellent companies so that Busan can vigorously leap forward as a ‘global hub city.’”
Oh Jae-hwan, Vice President of the Busan Research Institute, said, “Although it is true that Busan’s urban competitiveness and residential environment are improving, based on this research, the city will put more effort into developing specialized youth policies unique to Busan and conducting follow-up research so that our young people can grow together with the companies that have come to Busan.” He added, “We hope for greater interest and expectations from citizens and companies for our Busan and its youth.”
