Gwanak-gu, Leaping Toward a Smart Advanced City Enjoyed by Both Seniors and Children

“Even without meeting in person, everyone can enjoy singing contests, and the world has truly become better.”

An elderly participant in the online singing competition was filled with excitement.

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee), advancing toward the creation of a smart city, is attracting attention by showcasing various projects incorporating cutting-edge technology.

First, on December 6, the district held the ‘Smart Senior Center Online Singing Contest’ attended by Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, and the head of the Korea Senior Citizens Association Gwanak Branch.

Since February this year, the district has established 10 ‘Smart Senior Centers’?the first in Seoul?providing seniors with three ICT-based services: ▲Intelligent Health Management (Smart Healthcare) ▲Leisure Welfare Programs using Video Platforms ▲Kiosk Experience.

This singing contest was conducted by seniors from each Smart Senior Center communicating with seniors from other centers through online videos.

The seniors proudly showcased their singing skills honed through the regular Smart Senior Center program, the ‘Video Singing Class,’ while cheering and enjoying themselves.

Additionally, the district is recently piloting the ‘Cultural Interpretation Tour with Robots’ at Nakseongdae Park, the first of its kind nationwide.

The ‘Cultural Interpretation Tour with Robots’ utilizes ▲an autonomous outdoor robot and ▲an AI indoor robot named ‘Riku.’

The autonomous outdoor robot previously served as a safety guardian patrolling blind spots in urban residential areas (Seorim-dong, Gwanak-gu) last year, a first nationwide. This year, with added cultural interpretation functions, it provides both crime prevention patrols and cultural interpretation services.

The AI robot Riku has been popular since 2021, used in welfare centers and daycare centers to enhance seniors’ digital capabilities and children’s education. Recently, it gained the ability to narrate the fairy tale of General Gang Gamchan.

Residents participating in the cultural interpretation tour can walk with the outdoor robot through Nakseongdae Park (from the park entrance → General Gang Gamchan statue → Hongsalmun gate → near Angukmun gate) while listening to historical stories about ‘General Gang Gamchan.’ Also, at the Gang Gamchan Exhibition Hall inside the park, they can enjoy Riku’s narrated fairy tale, ‘Starlight Hero, Gang Gamchan.’

The cultural interpretation tour will be piloted until December 15 this year and is scheduled for official operation starting February next year. For more details, contact the Smart Information Division of Gwanak-gu.

Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, stated, “We will continue to discover and operate various smart city projects for our residents and do our best to provide smart administrative services.”
