Kim Zain, National Sports Climbing Athlete, "I Will Strive to Promote Gangbuk-gu to the World"
Lee Soon-hee, Gangbuk-gu Mayor, "Please Remember That 300,000 Gangbuk-gu Residents Are Cheering for You"
Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) awarded a certificate of appointment as an ambassador to climbing queen Kim Ja-in at the district office auditorium on the 12th.
Kim has been active as a Gangbuk-gu ambassador since March 20 of this year, and due to her schedule participating in international competitions, the certificate awarding ceremony was held this time. On the day, Kim Ja-in’s spouse, National Assembly member Oh Young-hwan, also accompanied her to offer congratulations.
National representative Kim Ja-in set an astonishing record by winning a total of 31 titles (30 in lead climbing and 1 in bouldering) at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup, the most prestigious competition in the sport climbing field, from November 2009 to July 2023.
She has been ranked number one in the world in the lead climbing category and was the first in South Korea to sweep various medals at the Sport Climbing World Championships, including the overall championship.
Gangbuk-gu and Kim Ja-in share a deep connection. The character ‘In’ in Kim Ja-in’s name was taken from Insubong Peak of Bukhansan Mountain in Ui-dong, Gangbuk-gu, and Kim began her prime training in her early twenties at an indoor climbing gym in Beon-dong, Gangbuk-gu. She currently operates a climbing center near Suyu Station.
Despite her busy schedule, Kim leads efforts for the healthy growth of local youth by conducting a class called ‘Climbing My Dream’ with Gangbuk-gu Office as a Gangbuk-gu ambassador.
Kim Ja-in said, "I am honored to be appointed as an ambassador for Gangbuk-gu. Suyu-dong is where I trained and first reached world number one in my twenties. I will do my best to promote proud Gangbuk-gu, a precious connection, to the world."
Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, "Congratulations to Kim Ja-in on her gold medal achievements. I hope we can soar even higher together with Gangbuk-gu, and please remember that 300,000 residents of Gangbuk-gu always support you."
Meanwhile, Ui-dong in Gangbuk-gu is a key location for mountain leisure in the heart of Seoul. It is home to Insubong Peak, a sacred site for rock climbing on Bukhansan Mountain, and features the Bukhansan International Climbing Center, Mountain Culture H·U·B, and Ui-dong Family Camping Site, making it popular and suitable for family mountain leisure activities.
