Elderly at Yeongdeungpo-gu Senior Centers Grow Crops Smartly...

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that in early December, it installed 'Smart Farms' at two local smart senior centers (Gurip Mullae No.1 and Gurip Dongsim).

A Smart Farm is an intelligent farm that remotely and automatically controls temperature, humidity, light, water, and other factors necessary for crop cultivation based on information and communication technology (ICT). It optimally maintains and manages the growth environment of crops to harvest high-quality produce.

The Smart Farm is installed in the idle space of the smart senior centers, measuring 80cm wide, 75cm deep, and 200cm high. It is equipped with dedicated LED lighting for plant cultivation, remote and automatic control facilities, cooling devices, and can hydroponically cultivate over 300 seedlings on three-tiered cultivation trays.

Using digital technology, the Smart Farm enables year-round cultivation regardless of climate. Seniors can experience the joy and fulfillment of harvesting crops themselves through the Smart Farm, bringing vitality to their daily lives.

Additionally, once a month, a senior instructor will visit the senior centers to conduct a ‘Senior Healing Program’ linked with the Smart Farm. The crops grown organically without pesticides will be used in seniors’ healthy diets or shared with neighbors in the community.

Next year, the district plans to continuously support customized programs reflecting the demand of seniors at senior centers, including ▲‘Digital Education’ such as smartphones and kiosks ▲‘Health Management’ such as health guidelines, calisthenics, and yoga ▲‘Leisure Activities’ such as singing classes, horticultural therapy, and knitting.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “The Smart Farm, combined with digital technology, will help enhance seniors’ leisure activities and provide healthy food. We will do our best to improve the quality of life for seniors by operating customized programs so that they can become more familiar with digital culture.”
