Led the defamation case of the late Father Jo Bio during tenure as Gwangju District Prosecutor General
Yang Bu-nam, the chairman of the Democratic Party's Legal Committee who once led the investigation into the case involving former President Jeon Du-hwan, watched the film Seoul Spring and described it as "a heartbreaking history."
While serving as the head of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, Chairman Yang actively led the prosecution in the defamation case involving the late Father Cho Bi-o.
On the 10th, Chairman Yang watched the film Seoul Spring, which is set against the backdrop of the December 12, 1979 coup d'?tat. It is especially meaningful that he watched the film together with the MZ generation born after 1979.
After watching the film, he said, "A long time has passed, but this is still an unresolved part of our history and society," adding, "It must be addressed, and the exact truth must be uncovered."
He continued, "While serving as the head of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, I actively led the defamation case of the late Father Cho Bi-o against Jeon Du-hwan. This ultimately led to the government's first official acknowledgment of the helicopter machine-gun shootings during the May 18 Democratic Movement, and Jeon Du-hwan was brought to trial in the Gwangju court. The law must be equal before all people. Only then can we have a fair society," he emphasized.
Meanwhile, Cho Young-dae, the parish priest of Hanam Parish and nephew of the late Father Cho Bi-o, expressed special gratitude during his congratulatory speech at Chairman Yang Bu-nam’s book launch event on the 2nd, saying, "Despite many obstacles, it was Yang Bu-nam who, with his own convictions and persistence, ultimately succeeded in prosecuting. Because of that prosecution, Jeon Du-hwan was able to stand trial in the Gwangju court."
Chairman Yang Bu-nam is preparing to run for the Gwangju Seo-gu Eul district in next year’s general election.
