999,988 People as of the Previous Day... 12 Left
Kia Presents Electric Car to 1,000,000th Citizen
The population of Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, is expected to exceed 1 million on the 11th.
According to Hwaseong City on that day, the population as of the previous day was counted at 999,988. It is only 12 people short of the 1 million mark, which is the criterion for designation as a special city. By nationality, there were 942,331 Koreans and 57,657 foreigners, totaling 999,988.
Considering that Hwaseong City's population increases by an average of 50 to 100 people per day, it is certain that the population will surpass 1 million on that day.
A population of 1 million is the criterion for designation as a special city. If the population exceeds 1 million for two consecutive years at the end of the year, the city will be designated as a special city starting from January of the following year. Accordingly, if Hwaseong meets this criterion by next year, it will become the fifth special city nationwide in January 2025. Currently, the special cities are Suwon, Yongin, and Goyang in Gyeonggi Province, and Changwon in Gyeongnam, totaling four.
Considering that many large and small companies are concentrated in Hwaseong City and that there are many foreign workers employed, there is also speculation that the actual population has already exceeded 1 million. This is because it is impossible to track the number of foreign residents in real time due to technical issues in resident registration statistics.
The Ministry of Justice notifies local governments of the number of registered foreigners as of the end of the previous month between the 10th and 13th of each month, but does not provide information up to the point of foreigner registration. The status of foreign resident registration as of the end of last month is expected to be delivered to Hwaseong City on the 13th.
Meanwhile, Kia Autoland Hwaseong, a company in the Hwaseong area, plans to present an electric vehicle to the resident who registers as the 1,000,000th resident. Hyundai Motor Company's Namyang Research Center, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, also plans to present an electric vehicle to the 1,000,030th resident.
