Decision at the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation will continue its activities as an advisory body in the field of UNESCO intangible heritage. On the 8th (Korean time), its qualification was extended at the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Kasane, Botswana.
The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage reviews the activities of advisory bodies and decides on reauthorization every four years. This time, out of ninety-one organizations, eighty, including the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, were recommended for reauthorization.
There are 217 non-governmental organizations authorized by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. They carry out various activities to protect intangible heritage and act as a bridge between communities that transmit this heritage and governments.
The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation was authorized as an advisory body in the field of UNESCO intangible heritage in 2010 and has been conducting various activities both domestically and internationally. In July, it co-hosted an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cultural Heritage Administration, and the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Intangible Cultural Heritage Center. An official promised, "We will continue to breathe life into humanity's intangible heritage through active advisory body activities."
