Seoul Metro Enhances Employee Rest Areas to Boost Staff Morale

Seoul Metro (President Baek Ho) announced that it has completed the remodeling of the employee lounge at the Sadang Annex and held an opening ceremony on the 7th to boost employee morale and improve work efficiency and employee satisfaction.

The Sadang Annex, where about 900 employees work, had demands from employees for improvements in the working environment and rest areas due to aging facilities (built in 1983, over 40 years old) and crowded workspaces.

The remodeling of the employee lounge, themed “A TEMPO”_ 원래 내 템포로 (At My Original Tempo), aimed to create a comfortable book cafe and an open, luxurious space tailored to employee needs.

By demolishing non-load-bearing interior walls in the corridor, an additional 32㎡ of space was created (from the original 140㎡ to an improved 177㎡), securing a sense of visual spaciousness. Additionally, a high ceiling was secured to enhance openness.

The design adopted a direction that maximizes the view of ‘Umyeonsan’ Mountain. To this end, window seats were installed inside the lounge, and parametric design methods using 3D printing and CNC were applied to create a design concept where employees can rest under wooden pillars with a view of Umyeonsan.

The corporation plans various measures to boost employee morale to foster a productive work atmosphere. Earlier, since July, Seoul Metro has been improving the headquarters’ working environment to enhance work efficiency and employee satisfaction, completing improvements to the headquarters’ lounge and installing partition walls for each division and department.

Furthermore, through the operation of a promotion points system and improvements to the promotion system, the company is motivating employees to perform their duties responsibly, improve job skills, and promote self-development.

Special awards are also given to employees who achieve excellent job performance, contribute to the corporation’s development, and receive recognition from external organizations. Moreover, to make the corporation a “happy workplace good for raising children,” policies such as providing childbirth conveniences, creating an environment for parental leave and return support, and a reduced working hours system during childcare periods are implemented to help balance work and life.

Baek Ho, President of Seoul Metro, said, “The corporation is considering various ways to create a work atmosphere where employees want to work and to boost employee morale. The improvement of the Sadang Annex employee lounge is one of them,” adding, “We expect that an environment where employees are satisfied and work well will lead to a virtuous cycle of enhanced citizen safety and service.”
