Last year, transportation industry sales recorded approximately 232 trillion won, an increase of about 20% compared to the previous year. With the end of social distancing measures due to the COVID-19 endemic, airline passenger sales increased by nearly 200%.
According to the '2022 Transportation Industry Survey Results' (provisional) announced by Statistics Korea on the 8th, last year's transportation industry sales amounted to 232.5 trillion won, an increase of 38.5 trillion won (19.8%) compared to the previous year. Land transportation sales were 81.9 trillion won, accounting for 35.2% of the total, warehousing and transportation services recorded 63.9 trillion won (27.5%), water transportation 63.4 trillion won (27.3%), and air transportation 23.4 trillion won (10.1%).
Air transportation sales increased by 57.9% compared to the previous year, showing the highest growth rate among the sectors. Specifically, air cargo sales amounted to 12.396 trillion won, up 12.2%, and airline passenger sales surged 192.7% to 10.981 trillion won. A Statistics Korea official stated, "With the lifting of social distancing measures in the first half of last year, demand for overseas travelers greatly increased, leading to a rise in air transportation sales."

In land transportation, road freight sales recorded 51.4 trillion won, land passenger transport 20.7 trillion won, railway transport 9.3 trillion won, and other transportation 400 billion won. In water transportation, foreign shipping sales reached 60.8 trillion won, increasing by 37.1%, driving the overall improvement in water transportation performance. Warehousing and transportation services recorded sales of 37.6 trillion won in freight handling brokerage and 13.1 trillion won in transportation support.
During the same period, both the number of transportation industry enterprises and employees increased. The number of enterprises rose 4.1% from the previous year to 598,000. This includes 574,000 (95.9%) in land transportation, 23,000 (3.9%) in warehousing and transportation services, 1,000 (0.2%) in water transportation, and 72 (0.0%) in air transportation. While the total number of transportation enterprises increased mainly in land transportation (4.2%), such as freight and individual cargo truck transportation, water transportation decreased by 3.6%.
The number of employees increased by 1.6% from the previous year to 1,338,000. Land transportation accounted for the largest share with 1,051,000 employees (78.6%), followed by warehousing and transportation services with 223,000 (16.6%), air transportation with 38,000 (2.8%), and water transportation with 26,000 (2.0%).
