Jeju Maritime Police Station (Chief So Byeong-yong) announced on the 7th that it conducted an outreach marine environmental conservation activity at Hallim Port in connection with the promotion of the ‘Useongsun Project’.
The ‘Useongsun Project’ is an abbreviation of ‘Uri Saengsubyeong Dwegajyeowa Jawon-euro Sunhwanhaeyo’ (Bring Back Our Water Bottles and Recycle Them as Resources). It is a project jointly carried out by the Fisheries Cooperative, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation, and the Maritime Police to prevent illegal marine dumping of discarded water bottles, one of the plastics generated on fishing vessels.

The Jeju Maritime Police operated a coffee truck at Hallim Port, offering a cup of coffee to fishermen who brought water bottles, promoting the meaning of the Useongsun Project and the process by which returned discarded plastics are recycled and reborn as new products, encouraging fishermen’s participation in marine environmental conservation activities.
Two hundred fishermen participated in the Useongsun Project held that day, resulting in the collection of plastics. Up to last month, 131 fishing vessels participated, returning a total of 12,864 Samdasoo plastic bottles. Through onshore collection and processing, this contributed to reducing marine litter and achieving carbon neutrality through resource circulation.
A Jeju Maritime Police official said, “Many fishermen’s participation in the Useongsun Project is necessary for marine environmental conservation,” and added, “We ask for continued cooperation and participation in various activities by the Jeju Maritime Police Station to reduce marine plastics.”
