South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and girl group NewJeans were selected among the 71 most stylish people of the year by the American daily The New York Times (NYT).
On the 6th (local time), NYT named President Yoon as one of the 'Most Stylish People of 2023,' featuring a photo of him singing "American Pie" at the White House during his state visit to the U.S. in April.
Regarding the selection, NYT commented, "His flawless performance of 'American Pie' at the White House rivaled 'American Idol'." American Idol is a long-running popular music audition program on ABC in the U.S. During his visit on April 26, President Yoon gained attention for passionately singing Don McLean's "American Pie" at the White House state dinner.
Girl group NewJeans was also named among this year's most stylish figures. NYT explained the reason for their selection, stating, "The NewJeans members wearing bunny ear hats topped the Billboard charts with a sound inspired by late 1990s and early 2000s R&B. Additionally, they stood out in various ways, including being the first female K-pop artists to perform at the major music festival Lollapalooza." NewJeans attracted attention by being listed sixth in the total list of 71 people, which was described as having no particular order.
Other notable figures named by NYT as the most stylish this year included King Charles III of the United Kingdom, Pope Francis, and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms. Pop star Taylor Swift, the originator of the neologism 'Swiftnomics' and named Time magazine's 'Person of the Year,' was also included.
Some of those selected were not people. Representative examples include the half-sphere-shaped performance venue 'Sphere' in Las Vegas, a new landmark in the U.S.; the Barbie doll from the movie "Barbie"; the Burberry bag that drew ridicule in the U.S. drama Succession Season 4, centered around a wealthy family in New York's Upper East Side; and a cockroach that appeared on the red carpet at this year's Met Gala, capturing the spotlight.
Regarding this year's list, NYT stated, "Some of those selected are not 'people.' Some may surprise you and spark heated debates. Ultimately, the common thread is that all those selected made us talk about what we wear, how we live, and how we express ourselves."
