Haenam-gun Strengthens Quarantine Measures Following AI Crisis Level Raised to 'Severe'

Operation of Situation Room Including Expansion of Farm Spot Inspections and Strengthening Quarantine at Migratory Bird Habitats

Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, is strengthening AI quarantine measures in the area following the first domestic case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) confirmed this winter.

According to the county on the 6th, after highly pathogenic AI was detected for the first time this winter in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do on the 30th of last month, AI antigens were also detected for the first time on the 3rd in a poultry farm within the province, raising the crisis level from ‘caution’ to ‘severe’.

Haenam-gun has decided to increase regular inspections of laying hen and native chicken farms from once a month to twice a month to detect infected individuals early, and duck farms will be inspected weekly.

In particular, five farms near migratory bird habitats where many migratory birds gather have been designated as priority quarantine management farms, with environmental inspections conducted twice a month.

Quarantine rules for farm isolation have also been strengthened, including two-step disinfection of incoming vehicles, daily disinfection around farms, control of vehicle and outsider access within farms, and strict adherence to quarantine rules such as limiting worker activities and gatherings.

At major migratory bird habitats, access control signs have been installed, and disinfecting measures such as applying quicklime on access roads and using quarantine equipment for disinfection are being carried out.

The Haenam-gun Livestock Division operates a special quarantine countermeasures situation room for disaster livestock diseases including AI, establishing a 24-hour emergency dispatch system for suspected reports.

A county official urged, “Residents should refrain from visiting migratory bird habitats, and farms must strictly follow quarantine rules such as installing nets to block wild birds, disinfecting farm entrances, and controlling outsider access.”
