Moving Forward with the Sale of the 'First Carbon Emission Rights'
Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) has taken an important step toward carbon neutrality.
According to the county on the 5th, the final report meeting on the ‘Shinan Carbon Neutral Greenhouse Gas Emission Rights’ research project was held on the 1st.
The greenhouse gas emission rights research consisted of the first phase of the study, including the status of environmental infrastructure facilities and power plants within Shinan-gun, methods for measuring greenhouse gas emissions, and certification plans for emission rights using Shinan tidal flats as carbon sinks.
The research project was conducted from April to August and focused on the potential of Shinan Blue Carbon, marine blue carbon research, revenue generation through discovering various external project cases related to greenhouse gas emission rights, and plans to form a specialized response team.
At the final report meeting, discussions were held on ways to acquire greenhouse gas emission rights for Shinan tidal flats, establishing a carbon information collection system, recent blue carbon trends, and carbon neutrality policies utilizing Shinan’s natural environment.
The county plans to acquire tidal flat greenhouse gas emission rights and establish a carbon information collection system through this research, and in 2024, it will promote the estimation of greenhouse gas absorption by tidal flats and research on carbon sinks.
Additionally, efforts will be made to be selected for the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Carbon Neutrality Support Center Operation’ contest in 2024.
The Carbon Neutrality Support Center aims to enhance local participation and awareness of carbon neutrality, conduct surveys, research, and educational promotion, improve cooperation among local governments, and strengthen capabilities to implement carbon neutrality policies.
Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “Through the Carbon Neutrality Support Center, we aim to make Shinan a carbon-neutral city by 2050 and play a central role in energy transition led by residents and the spread of lifestyle culture.”
He also emphasized, “We will devote ourselves to making Shinan-gun a place where daily life is enjoyable through continuous promotion of carbon neutrality policy contest projects.”
