Gumi City in Gyeongbuk will serialize its first webtoon, "Oh! Rokju," themed around the master singer Park Rokju, on the webtoon platform KakaoPage on the 7th.

"Oh! Rokju" features the girl master singer Rokju and a timid high school student Haewon as the main characters. In 2023, Haewon time-slips back 100 years to Gumi, where she meets Rokju, and through the events that unfold, the growth of the two protagonists is depicted.

"Rokju" is based on the real person, master singer Park Rokju, known as the "master of Dongpyeonje." Born in 1905 in Gwansim-ri, Goa-eup, Gumi City, Gyeongbuk, she is recognized as a female master singer representing Pansori and a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property for Pansori performances of "Chunhyangga" and "Heungboga."

The city is conducting a subscriber event on KakaoPage to promote the webtoon. Sixteen types of "Rokju" character emoticons (Rokjuticons) can be received for free by adding the Gumi City Hall channel on KakaoTalk, which is expected to help spread the character and enhance promotional effects via mobile.

Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, "We expect that by naturally introducing Gumi’s attractions and master singer Park Rokju through webtoons, which have strong influence and accessibility among the younger generation, it will stimulate interest in the region and contribute to revitalizing tourism in Gumi and enhancing its image as a cultural city."
