Shinshin Pharmaceutical is showing strong performance. The next-generation microneedle drug technology has been highlighted following news that domestic researchers have developed a new treatment for alopecia areata using microneedles.

According to industry sources, domestic researchers recently developed a new treatment that can evenly deliver drugs directly to the scalp area affected by alopecia areata using dissolvable microneedles. Until now, steroid injections administered directly by doctors had inconsistent effects depending on the depth and spacing of the injections.

The microneedle-type treatment developed by domestic researchers can deliver drugs in solid form to an appropriate depth in the scalp. Unlike the conventional cone shape, it is designed in the shape of a candle flame, allowing a larger amount of drug to be delivered deeper. In experiments with rats, the researchers confirmed that more hair grew evenly when using microneedles compared to applying the same drug as a cream or injection.

Meanwhile, Shinshin Pharmaceutical completed the establishment of its own research facilities for next-generation microneedle drug development last October. This facility setup not only enables further research on additional microneedle formulations but is also expected to shorten the drug development period.

Shinshin Pharmaceutical is developing coated microneedle drugs using its own facilities. Unlike dissolvable microneedles where the needle itself is the drug, coated microneedles carry the drug coated on the needle surface, minimizing the possibility of side effects caused by overdose. It can also be applied to heat-sensitive drugs, broadening the range of drugs that can be loaded. The short drying time and use of only the appropriate amount of drug maximize production efficiency.
