Gangnam-gu Converts 904 Women-Only Parking Spaces to Family-Friendly Parking Spaces

Family-Friendly Parking Area Established in Yeoksam Cultural Park

Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) is converting 904 female-priority parking spaces in 43 public and affiliated parking lots into family-friendly parking spaces.

Family-friendly parking spaces are an expanded concept of the existing female-priority parking spaces, reflecting the transition into a super-low birthrate and aging society. The target users have been broadened from women to include pregnant women, elderly people, those with mobility difficulties, their companions, and people accompanied by infants and young children. Following the amendment of the Seoul Metropolitan Government ordinance on July 18, guidelines for creating family-friendly parking lots were established. The district revised the Gangnam-gu Parking Lot Installation and Management Ordinance on November 3 and began construction of family-friendly parking spaces on November 22.

Family-friendly parking spaces must account for at least 10% of the total parking capacity in public and private parking lots with 30 or more parking spaces. They should be located near payment booths, entrances, elevators, and in areas where safety can be ensured by CCTV. The district plans to complete the repainting of the existing 904 female-priority parking spaces, which make up about 17% of the total 5,049 parking spaces in public and affiliated parking lots, by the first quarter of next year and promote the change.

Additionally, private parking lots will be encouraged to create family-friendly parking spaces by 2024.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “As the population structure changes, the range of drivers and passengers requiring consideration is expanding, making the transition to family-friendly parking spaces necessary. We will continue to carefully develop and implement policies to create an environment that is convenient for the elderly to move around and good for those with children.”
