Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xueshang Reveals at COP28 Speech
China, the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, stated that addressing climate change requires not only international cooperation but also increased support for developing countries. Ding Xueshang, China's Vice Premier, made these remarks during a speech at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the 3rd, according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.
Vice Premier Ding said, "China is committed to promoting international cooperation for green development, energy revolution, and climate change response, and supports developing countries in enhancing their climate change response capabilities." He added, "As the world's largest developing country, China has always stood with many developing countries, sharing hardships and working closely with them to move toward a green, low-carbon future." He further asserted, "Developed countries must fulfill their promises by actually increasing financial and technological support to developing countries."
He also stated, "Humanity shares a common destiny in the face of the challenges posed by climate change, so we must strengthen unity and cooperation to achieve mutual benefits and common prosperity." He emphasized, "We need to accelerate the transition to green energy, increase the share of renewable energy, and rapidly foster environmentally friendly, low-carbon lifestyles."
According to data from the international environmental organization Climate Action Tracker (CAT), of the 5 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases emitted worldwide last year, China accounted for 1.44 billion metric tons, representing 30% of the total. It is the country with the highest greenhouse gas emissions. Per capita greenhouse gas emissions are highest in Saudi Arabia at 20.7 tons, followed by Australia, the United States, Canada, Russia, South Korea, Iran, and China.
